Back from NebrasKon!

Mon Nov 9, 2009, 12:08 PM
I've technically been back since yesterday at about 4:30pm CST, but we went over to Zach's mother's place to have dinner with her and do laundry.

FRIDAY:
Friday was an interesting day to say the least. Zach and I woke up at about 9:00AM. I had immediately gone to my work station to continue working on my charms, while he had gone off on his usual morning 'get ready' routine. I had been preparing a batch of charms to be baked last minute, and he had made us 'eggs in a basket' for breakfast, as we had watched V for Vendetta with our friends the previous night. At about noon, we had a few errands to run--he needed to go to the bank and deposit a few paychecks as well as pull out some cash for the convention, then we were going to a friend's place to pick up one of my loaned out games(two of the voice actors for the game were to be at the convention), then we were looking for a white scarf and brown leather gloves to finish Zach's Porco Rosso cosplay.
I started panicking when Zach had pointed out that we had spent a little too much time running our errands, so when we were finished, we went home, and I started to run aournd like a chicken with its head cut off to make sure I had everything I needed. I mean, I couldn't remember what time I had told the convention staff that I would be arriving, but at the same time, no one had responded to me when I had sent in an email so that I could be reminded. We wound up arriving between 2:30 and 3:00PM. After being passed from staff member to staff member, I finally found myself in the hands of the Dealer/Artist Alley Head, then shortly at my table. I'm assuming that I was placed next to Midknyte Studios, as Kat's name isn't listed with any of the active links. Kat, her mother, and her friend were very nice people. I'll hold my tongue about what I thought about what was available at their table, as I do not hold the same beliefs that they do, and I do not wish to offend anyone.
While I was setting up, Kat had asked me what I had brought with me to the convention, so I was explaining that I make charms from Sculpey III clay, and that I had cell phone lanyards to put them on, then realized that of everything I had to bring with me, I had forgotten the lanyards. I had to text Zach to find out where he was lurking, so that he could run home and get them for me. I felt terrible that I had to send him for something like that, but at the same time, it was predicted that I would forget something.
The Dealer's Room/Artist Alley area opened to VIP con-goers at 5:00PM, but I did not notice anyone enter, as most everyone was still setting up. I had began to panic again, as my table partner ~X-Tersa27-X had not arrived yet. At 6:00PM, the area opened to everyone. There were several nice people that had stopped by to at least look at what I had to offer. It was a bit tough learning how to read and interact with the convention-goers to be able to sell my product to them. At about 7:30pm, ~X-Tersa27-X had arrived. She was about as stressed as I was about her late arrival, but she was also driving from UNL to the convention, whereas I was driving just a quick jaunt down the interstate to it. We didn't sell too much that first day, but that was all right. I know that a lot of people are pretty hesitant about buying anything in general on the first day.
I really don't recall which panels that Zach had gone to, but our friend Joseph had decided to go to the convention. I'm not sure if it was so that Zach had someone to be with while I was in the Alley or what, but it was nice that he had shown up. Zach had bought me a 6" tall figure of Dawn with Buneary from Diamond/Pearl, as well as a few Strawberry Marshmallow gashapons. I had bought myself a Melon Pan from Wizzywing, Inc. because I had gotten hungry. At about 7:30PM, I had gotten a call from Zach that he and Joseph as well as a few of our other friends had gone down the street to a Perkins restaurant, and that they were going to bring me a meal to go. at about 8:00PM, they had arrived back at my table with a Chicken Finger meal. I had eaten half of it, then continued working on upping my portfolio for the rest of the weekend.
At 9:00PM, when the Dealer's Area closed, I was in a bit of a predicament--I had no tablecloth/sheet to cover my table with. I wound up leaving my display cage to mark that I was coming back, but I had to pack up most everything because I didn't feel comfortable leaving my charms behind overnight. On our way home, we had stopped by Wal*Mart to get me a tablecloth for Saturday.

SATURDAY:
Saturday was a bit more interesting. Zach had set our alarm to 7:00AM for me. I had gotten up and done my typical routine, checked my email and whatnot, and had gotten everything back together for the convention. We were told that the area would be open at 9:00AM for the dealers to restock/re-set up/etc. So we had left our place at about 8:15-8:30AM to get there. We had waited for about 20 minutes for the convention staff to arrive, but even after the Dealer's Head arrived, we still had to wait an additional 10-20 minutes for Hotel Staff to come open the doors for us.
Zach had helped me get the table cloth in place, then I proceeded to re-set up my display. He did tell me he felt a little useless because he couldn't help me set anything up, but at the same time, the display is part of the artist's aesthetic, so he understood why I didn't let him help too much. The area had opened at 10:00AM and business was doing a little bit better after 12:00PM rolled around. The Dealer's Head--Dillon Kaarstad/D-Chan--bought a Luxury Ball charm with a strap from me, and that helped people be encouraged to buy my things. ~X-Tersa27-X was late again, but it was due to costume issues instead of being purely late.
I had gotten away from the Dealer's Room for the first time at about 1:30PM. I had to use the restroom like crazy, then at 2:00PM was the start of the Autograph Session. I really wanted to go to that because Yuri Lowenthal(Sasuke Uchiha-Naruto, Dr. Derek Stiles-Trauma Center:New Blood, Bobby Drake-Wolverine and the X-Men, Ben Tennyson-Ben 10, etc.) was to be there as well as Tara Platt(Temari-Naruto, Dr. Valerie Blaylock-Trauma Center:New Blood, Mitsuru/Elizabeth-Persona 3, etc.). I was fangasming pretty hardcore because they were so awesome to talk to, and it seemed as though they found the fangasming as flattering instead of creepy and weird. xD
We both received a few commissions, and I had sold a few more charms. Zach and I had traded in a few of our unwanted manga to Fast Food Anime, and Zach had picked out the complete series of Ergo Proxy for me instead of getting the complete series of Black Lagoon like he wanted. Later that day, I had purchased Black Lagoon for him with some of my profts as a 'thank you' for the hell I had put him through so far, and as a 'thank you' in advance for the hell I had yet to put him through.
The Dealer's area closed at 6:00PM because the Cosplay Contest was starting, and most everyone goes to that. Instead of going, Zach and I covered my display cage with the table cloth, and took everything else home with us to get some much needed rest for the final day of the convention.

SUNDAY:
Our alarm went off at 7:00AM again for us to get up and get ready. Zach had decided to bribe customers with doughnuts, so we stopped by No Frills on our way to the convention. We picked up a dozen for the bribery, and two for myself so that I wouldn't go hungry too easily. When we arrived, it still took a bit of a wait to get the Dealer's area opened, but it was much quicker than Saturday. While I was setting everything back up, I decided to place up my unfinished/unpainted charms on the sides to let people know that I could custom paint those ones for them and have them done before the weekend was over.
When the doors had opened at 10:00AM, I did get a lot of bites at my charms because of the doughnuts. There's no shame in that if they were already interested, but it seemed like a few people wanted the doughnut more than the charms, but most of it was "I wanted the charm anyway. I don't need the doughnut." I got a few commissions for some of my unpainted charms, and a few more of ones that I would have to go home and make. It made me very happy that I sold so much of my stock. ~X-Tersa27-X was late again, but this time it was due to illness. She had been running a fever and had passed out pretty hard after she had gotten home the previous night. The day went very awesomely. I got a Totodile plush, and Joseph had bought Zach the Bishoujo Black Widow figure. I was a little upset that I had missed the screening of the You Are (Not) Alone Evangelion movie, but I figured that it would be on DVD soon enough, and that I would just get it then.
What made Sunday's end one of the most awesome events was that Tara Platt was out wandering through the Dealer's Room. When I had realized that it was her, I had squee'd and almost exactly shrieked, "OMGOMGOMGOMG. TARA'S HERE! CAN I HAVE A PICTURE WITH YOU? WHO HAS THE CAMERA?!" I think she was laughing at me, but that's all right. She was super nice--and skinny like crazy! D:
It took a little while to pack everything back up to go home, but it was a very good weekend. I earned more than I expected(about $250 total before some spending), and I really hope that I can do this again next year. I really hope that eventually that I can go to all of the major midwest conventions, but that's getting ahead of myself right now.

To any of you that have taken the time to read this: If you had stopped by my table, thank you so much for at least taking a look. If you had stopped by and purchased something, thank you so very very much for your patronage! And at the risk of sounding cheesy, I really do hope to see all of you again next year, but of course keep checking back for updates and whatnot. I hope to get a new camera so that I can take some decent quality pictures. I also hope to have things up on etsy soon, but of course I will always be taking commissions!

I passed by the window, and marked with one eye,
How the owl and the panther were sharing a pie.
The panther took pie crust, gravy and meat,
While the owl took the dish as his share of the treat.

How's the cactuar holding up?
:iconocularfracture:
^_^ quite well, thank you. Matt put it on his DSi.
:) I loved your charms, you did such a nice job. Did you sculpt them each by hand? That must've been hard. I made molds of mine, but it was still a pain to cut them all out of the clay x_x

:iconangrytanuki:
i had sculpted all of them because i wasn't smart enough to think of molds. xD
:iconocularfracture:
Wowww, you did a great job, then. I'd have gotten tired of sculpting them all by hand. But sculpy makes this great mold stuff. :) Hobby Lobby has it.
Well, it's cool that I saw you at the convention. I'd been trying to think of some way to become friends outside of Penguin, but I'm kind of shy around people.
:D
